Concept
Let it breathe.
Breathe for all life
"Let it Breathe."
That's the belief at the root of everything we do.
MASUMO, a team of gardeners based in Japan,
expresses that belief through what we call Breathing Gardens.
Air that moves. Water that flows. Soil that breathes.
We hope that the gardens and work we create
are felt, by people everywhere, as truly breathing —
and every day, we work toward restoring the breath of the Earth.
We believe that every piece of land, and every person who lives with it,
has their own way of wanting to connect with nature.
MASUMO listens to that wish,
and helps bring to life the breathing garden each person believes in.
To regenerate the Earth.
To create Breathing Gardens.
To become a bridge between people and nature.
CEO
Born the eldest son into a family that has run a landscaping business since 1922 (Taisho 11).
After graduating high school, he went abroad — studying language in the United States and Italy, and spending time in Africa — immersing himself in different cultures as he took time to look inward.
After returning to Japan, he worked in Osaka before entering the landscaping industry, seeking a way of life closer to nature. While gaining hands-on experience in the field, he encountered Daichi no Saisei in 2015.
From 2016, he studied under Tomonori Yano, the founder of Daichi no Saisei, traveling together to sites across Japan and learning the skill — and the mindset — of listening to the unseen voice of the natural environment.
In 2018, he opened Mori no Takumi no, beginning landscaping and soil-improvement work rooted in the local community, and began practicing garden-making and environmental regeneration in earnest.
In 2022, he took over the family business and founded Masumo Garden Design, bringing traditional landscaping craft together with the philosophy of Daichi no Saisei.
Today, based in Japan, he takes on projects nationwide, creating spaces that resonate with the power of nature — and is now looking ahead to offering workshops overseas as well.
